Kim Henrie
Educator & Lifelong Learner
An educator with more than 20 years of experience in English as Second Language/ LINC in non-profit, college, university, and online settings. Experienced with standardized testing, curriculum and assessment development and editing, and portfolio-based language assessment.
Utilizing trauma-informed principles, specialized in helping learners to build their language and academic skills, as well as their confidence, for employment or post-secondary studies with a strengths-based approach. Having supplemented my teaching skills with an Ontario College Graduate Certificate in Mental Health & Disability Management, I am looking for opportunities to provide greater support to newcomers and refugees that addresses all aspects of their lives both inside and outside of the classroom.
Research Interests: Reflective Practice, Mental Health & Wellness, Resilience, and Trauma-informed Practice.
Teaching Philosophy
In order to create a learning environment which is both comfortable and empowering for learners, my approach to teaching is learner-centred, strengths-based and utilizes trauma-informed principles. I strive to make my classroom environment and materials inclusive to different learner needs by design, so that I can capture their learning as and when it happens. I see the role of the teacher as a facilitator or coach who guides the learners and the learning environment to enable learners to take control and responsibility for their own learning.
For these reasons, a comfortable environment which includes an open dialogue between learners and facilitator is crucial. This will allow for discussion and regular re-evaluation of goals which will ensure the effectiveness of instruction for both the facilitator and learners. I also strongly believe that effective teaching also involves learning. I see teaching and learning as a reciprocal relationship between learners and teachers.
My Positionality
My name is Kim Henrie (Pronouns: she/her). I’m a white settler of British and German heritage living and working in Hamilton which is situated on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishnaabeg nations, within the lands protected by the ‘Dish with One Spoon’ wampum agreement, directly adjacent to Haldimand Treaty territory.
I am a full-time professor at Mohawk College in the Programs for Newcomers department. The Hamilton area has been home to my family for a few generations; however, I am only the second person in my immediate family to receive a university degree.
Despite spending many years as a student in different post-secondary programs, I have rarely been the type of student who followed a linear program of study and becoming an educator was not something that I had envisioned. After reaching my 25th year of teaching, I’m always learning about how to meet the needs of my students while continuing to grow as an educator. I see the relationship between educators and learners as symbiotic with teaching and learning occurring in both directions. What truly excites me most about teaching, aside from watching my students reach their goals, is what I learn from the students.
As an avid language learner and linguist, I've studied numerous languages and methodologies relating to language teaching and acquisition and lived abroad while participating in immersive language programs. Although English is first language and the primary language of instruction that I use, I embrace the concept of translanguaging which provides a more fulsome understanding of language, particularly useful in the context in which I work as students often know multiple languages which are fundamental to their personal identities and relationships.
