Academic Integrity & GEN Ai: Identifying & Navigating the
Boundaries of Ethical Use
As a part of CEDP from September 2023 to July 2025, I was working on curriculum and materials design related to academic integrity and artificial intelligence for the College Preparation: Reading & Writing course that I teach. I decided to experiment with adding an Ai bot to my course to help my students develop claims, counter claims, and practice evaluating their strength. I have trialed this with 4 cohorts of College Preparation: Reading & Writing students. In my blog, I've written about my process for developing some new approaches and materials.
In week 8 of my course, the students choose a topic and begin brainstorming an outline for the their argumentative essays. This gives me a chance to weigh in on their topics and see if they’ve made a solid start. I’d previously noted that my students sometimes struggled with creating claim and counter claims related to their topics and would sometimes need to do some revision before writing their essays in Week 12.
Enter Claimbot. I’ve used it with 4 cohorts, and I think it has definitely helped. I’ve also collected some anonymous data from my students in Cohorts 1-3 so far to gauge their views.

As part of my new materials/approach to academic integrity, I've also built in the features discussed in my blog: badges, reflection questions, and analogy. These have proven quite effective, and I’ve had fewer issues related to academic integrity. My conversations with students have become less stressful. I have also built a relationship with Academic Integrity Office, and invited Hayley each semester to talk with my students. This has been really effective. Previously, I had needed to connect with Hayley over breaches, but there have been fewer breaches in recent cohorts. I’ve been able to work with her and create some remediation plans for students.
On the heels of this, I decided to share what I’d learned and been doing in class. I presented, first, at the Fall 2024 ATESL online conference. Following that, I was invited to repeat my presentation in a Tutela webinar in January 2025. Tutela is online community for ESL professionals focusing on language training for adult newcomers across Canada. The feedback has been great, but I keep trying find new ideas and new approaches.
